Indiana Motorcycle Operator Safety Education Program

For people who want to learn how to ride a motorcycle or improve their current riding skills and knowledge, courses are offered throughout the State through the Indiana Motorcycle Operator Safety Education Program. The program is administered through the Indiana Department of Education, and courses are conducted through three contractors: ABATE of Indiana, Inc.; Kokomo Center Township Consolidated School Corporation, and the Indiana State University Motorcycle Safety Program. A standard curriculum is taught at all training sites by instructors who have been nationally certified by the Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF), and who meet the additional requirements of the State Program. All contractors also meet or exceed the requirements of the MSF and the State of Indiana.

BRC - Basic Riding Course

The BRC is designed for the beginning rider, but is not limited to only new riders. Riders with experience also find the BRC to be an excellent course. Riders with more experience may consider the ERC (Experienced Rider Course - see next panel).

Courses can take anywhere from 15 to 20 hours to complete depending on weather, overall class progression and other factors. The BRC consists of classroom and on-cycle training, and can be completed in one weekend or 4 to 5 weekday evenings.

  • Cost
    • $75.00 ($50.00 non-refundable tuition and $25.00 refundable registration fee. The refundable registration fee may not be charged at all sites)
  • TRAINING MOTORCYCLES ARE PROVIDED!
  • Course materials are provided.
  • Eligibility - Anyone who is at least 15 years old (under 18 requires parental consent). No permit or license is required.
  • Successful completion of the course will waive the State skills test for licensing and may qualify you for an insurance discount.

Course Graduates Have This To Say:

"I believe that taking this course will someday save my life." - Chris A.

"Best money I’ve ever invested." - Bill Y.

"Learned more in one weekend than I thought I could." - Kathi V.

"I have taken this course before and I learned even more the second time." - Jeff G.

ERC - Experienced Rider Course

The ERC is designed for experienced riders who want to increase their knowledge of motorcycle dynamics and street riding strategies, practice advanced street riding skills on their own motorcycle in a controlled environment, and obtain their motorcycle endorsement if still riding on a permit.

Courses consist of 5 to 6 hours of on-cycle training with discussion sessions conducted between riding sessions.

  • Cost
    • $50.00 ($25.00 tuition and a refundable $25.00 registration fee. The refundable registration fee may not be charged at all sites)
  • Eligibility - All participants must have a currently valid motorcycle permit or endorsement. All participants must have street riding experience, and must ride their motorcycle to the course training site. All participants must provide proof of insurance on their motorcycle, and their motorcycle must pass an on-site safety inspection. To continue in the course, all participants must successfully meet the objectives of the first riding exercise (control at low speeds), and all subsequent exercises. To successfully complete the course, participants must pass a riding evaluation.
  • Successful completion of the course will waive the State skills test for permit holders for issue of a motorcycle endorsement, and may qualify for an insurance discount.
  • Motorcycle clubs and organizations may arrange to take the course as a group.

INSTRUCTOR PREPARATION COURSE

The Indiana Motorcycle Operator Safety Education Program is continuously looking for men and women who are interested in becoming motorcycle rider education instructors. The instructor course has been described by instructors as one of the most rewarding experiences they have had in their motorcycling careers. The 65-hour course is offered at various locations in Indiana each year, and provides the knowledge and skill needed to teach the BRC.

  • Cost - $25.00 (Participants are responsible for all travel, lodging and meal costs if applicable.)
  • All course materials are provided.
  • Eligibility - Must have a motorcycle endorsement and a good driving record. Must own and/or operate a motorcycle on a regular basis. Must attend all phases of the instructor course and pass the course skills test, written test and student teaching assignments. Must agree to the Motorcycle Safety Foundation’s (MSF) and the Indiana Department of Education’s rules of professional conduct. Completion of the BRC as a student is REQUIRED prior to taking the instructor preparation course.
  • Successful completion earns you national certification to teach the BRC anywhere in the United States and anywhere in the world where the MSF curriculum is used. In Indiana, instructors are paid for the courses they teach, and are invited to attend state, national, and international motorcycle safety conferences.

Why Take a Motorcycle Rider Education Course?

  • Motorcycles are specialized vehicles and require specialized knowledge and skill to operate them properly and safely.
  • The motorcycle rider education courses offered in Indiana are designed to present critical information and skills through curricula developed by the Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF).
  • All instructors are trained according to the MSF standards, are certified by the MSF, and must meet all additional criteria required by the Indiana Department of Education.
  • Nationally, more than 2,000,000 people have completed a rider education course since the first MSF curriculum was introduced in 1976. Since Indiana’s legislated rider education program started in 1987, over 50,000 Hoosiers have completed a rider education course.
  • Since the current program in Indiana started in 1987, motorcycle accidents and injuries have dropped dramatically and have remained significantly lower than before the program started.
  • Successfully completing a rider education course in Indiana waives the State skills test to receive your motorcycle endorsement, and could earn you a discount on your motorcycle insurance (check with your agent).
